Arbor Day 2020: Why Everyone Should Participate?: Arbor Day is America’s oldest environmental holiday and celebration which is celebrated every year on the fourth Friday in April. On Arbor Day, individuals and group of people are encouraged to plant trees. It is basically a tree-planting holiday that was founded in Nebraska in the year 1872. The main objective to create the day was to encourage people to plant trees in Nebraska, as it was largely a treeless state.
This resolution encouraged people all around the world and this day spread around the globe. In the present day, a lot of nations observe such a holiday. Arbor Day is much like Earth Day and the word Arbor in Latin means trees. Its main resolution is to encourage people to plant trees, and many groups of people take the opportunity to form tree-planting and litter-collecting events on or nearby the holiday.
However, the day is usually observed in the spring but the date may differ, depending on climate and appropriate planting season. A widespread Arbor Day practice is to plant a tree in honor or memory of a loved one.
On the first Arbor Day, more than 1 million trees were planted. The holiday has since fully-fledged, and it officially turns out to be a national holiday in the year 1972, as per to the Arbor Day Foundation Program Director Dana Karcher.
Why Everyone Should Participate in Arbor Day?
As we have mentioned above the main cause of the day and why we celebrate it. The main focus of the day is to plant more and more trees and therefore it is very necessary for us to participate in this day.
Trees have many positive environmental impacts due to which we are able to live, breathe and eat on this planet.
Trees create oxygen by absorbing carbon dioxide which also helps in cleaning the air. One acre of forest can absorb almost six tons of carbon dioxide and can create four tons of oxygen out of it. This is an adequate amount to come across the yearly needs of 18 people, as per to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Trees also help in lowering down the air temperatures. The net cooling effect of a young and healthy tree is equal to 10 room-size air conditioners that function 20 hours per day, as per to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Trees also help in saving energy, strategically planting trees can stimulate less energy usage, which interprets into a number of power plants in communities, as per to Karcher. Trees can help you save up to 56 percent on annual air-conditioning costs, as per to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
As per to the Arbor Day Foundation website, they state, “Large deciduous trees planted on the east, west, and northwest sides of your home create soothing shade from the hot summer sun and reduce summer air conditioning costs by up to 35 percent,”.
“Trees are one of the easiest ways to make our world a better place to live. They provide meaningful environmental benefits, increase our property values and provide homes for animals,” Karcher said.
There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a tree grow to be all that it can be for your community, so trees are really necessary for our well-being. Therefore we should pant trees occasionally and what can be better than planting the trees on Arbor Day.
