The Lion King (2019) Review: Is This Remake Of Classic Animated Film Worth Your Time?

Another remake of an American classic musical drama film, The Lion King (2019), is all set to make its theatrical release in the United States on July 19, 2019. There is huge anticipation regarding the movie. The audience, as well as the critics, are praising for its visual effects, soundtrack, and vocal performances, though the movie is also getting the criticism for being derivative of the original film.

Well, Disney nowadays is following their trend of making remakes on new versions of the movies such as Dumbo, Aladdin, and soon Little Mermaid and Mulan. These are those classic movies which are still viewed today even after decades of their original release. Though, after knowing this fact, it still seems to be unnecessary to make a remake of such classics. But even after releasing the new versions of these classics, the audience still appreciated it and were apparently successful enough to earn the great bucks in the box office.

So far, Disney shows no signs of stopping this trend and had yet come up with the remake of 1994 classic animated film, The Lion King. Well, now here’s the question that arises: Is the Lion King remake worth your time?

Coming back to this remake of the classic 1994 animated film of the same name, the movie is directed as well as produced by Jon Favreau, with a screenplay written by Jeff Nathanson, and produced by Walt Disney Pictures.

The film stars the voices of various famous celebrities such as Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, Billy Eichner, John Kani, John Oliver, and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, as well as James Earl Jones who is repeating his original role as Mufasa.

Positive Points:

One of the most positive points of the movie, for which it is being praised from the time of the release of its trailer, is its visual effects. The movie seems to be so real and it doesn’t seem like that it is an animated movie and all thank to its visual effects team who made the remake of this classic film even more remarkable through its incredible visual effects. Other than visual effects, the soundtrack along with the vocal performances of the film is very incredible.

Negative Points:

Well, the movie was criticized for being derivative of the original film as from its trailer you can easily say that the movie is the full copy of the original. Well, the trailers of the film were released on November 2018 which was also a shot-for-shot remake of Disney’s 1994 film. On December 23, 2018, Sean Bailey, who is the President of Production of Disney, said that while the film is going to “revere and love those parts that the audience wants”, there are still some “things in the movie that are going to be new”.

Favreau, on April 18, 2019, also said that “some shots in the 1994 animated film are so iconic” he couldn’t perhaps change them, then again “despite what the trailers suggest, this film is not just the same movie over again”, and well ahead said “it’s much longer than the original film. And part of what we’re doing here is to (give it more dimension) not just visually but both story wise and emotionally.”

Final Verdict

Well, as we all know how wonderful this classic movie is and there is no doubt regarding this thing. It’s a great movie to watch with your family and kids. The movie is also going to earn some great bucks in the box office collection worldwide same as other remakes of the classic movie did and this movie will also be going to be well appreciated ahead.
