           National Doctors Day falls on March 30 every year. It is celebrated to express our gratitude for the contributions of physicians to society. This is the day when Dr. Crawford W. Long first used ether anesthesia in surgery.  The Date may vary from nation to nation and in some nations, it is marked as a holiday. Different hospitals and clinic pay tribute to their doctors and physicians on Doctor’s day.

History

The first Doctor’s day was observed on March 30, 1933, in Winder, Georgia. The first observance includes the mailing of cards to the physicians and their wives, flowers placed on the grave of deceased doctors. After the Barrow County Alliance adopted Mrs. Almond’s resolution to pay tribute to the doctors, this plan was presented to the Georgia State Medical Alliance in 1933 by Mr. E.R. Harris of the winder, President of the Barrow County Alliance. On May 10, 1934, the resolution was introduced to the Women’s Alliance of the Southern Medical Association at its 29th annual meeting held in St. Louis, Missouri, November 19-22, 1935, by the alliance president, Mrs. j. Bonar White. Since then, Doctors’ Day has become an important part of the Southern Medical Association Alliance.

Then the holiday was officially signed in to the U.S. Law in early 1990,s buy president George Bush.

Brazil

In Brazil National Doctor’s Day is celebrated on October 18 as a holiday. On this day the Catholic Church celebrates the birthday of Saint Luke. Saint Luke was a doctor, as it is written in the New Testament(Colossians).

Canada

National Doctors day is celebrated in Canada on May 1.

Cuba

In Cuba National Doctor’s Day is celebrated on December 3rd as a holiday to mark the birthday of Carlos Juan Finlay. He was a Cuban physician and scientist recognized as a pioneer in yellow fever research. He was the first one to tell that a mosquito is a carrier of the yellow fever disease.

India

In India, the National Doctor’s Dy is celebrated on July 1 to honor the legendary physicians and the second chief minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan ChandraRoy. He was born on July 1, 1882, and died on the same date in 1962. Dr. Roy was also honored with the country’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna on February 4, 1961.

Iran

In Iran National Doctor’s Day is celebrated on 23 August to mark the birthday of Avicenna’s who is the most significant physician, astronomer, thinkers, and writer of the Islamic Golden Age. He has been described as the father of early modern medicine.

United States 

In U.S. National Doctor’s Day is celebrated on March 30 to mark the first use of anesthesia in surgery and painlessly excised a tumor from his neck. The idea came from Eudora Brown Almond.

Vietnam

In Vietnam, it is celebrated on 28 February.
