Hockey Canada 22 Players Names Released For 2019 IIHF World Championship

               2019 IIHF World Championship: Hockey Canada has recently declared the 22 players, comprising gold-medallists from earlier IIHF events, to Canada’s National Men’s Team for the 2019 IIHF Championship. The tournament is going to take place on 10 May 2019 and will go on till 26 May 2019 in Košice and Bratislava, Slovakia. It is going to be the second time that Slovakia will host the event as an independent country.

Every single team’s roster comprises of at least 15 skaters (forwards, and defencemen) as well as 2 goaltenders, and at most 22 skaters and 3 goaltenders. The total of 16 partaking nations, through the approval of their individual national associations, had to submit a “Long List” no later than two weeks before the competition, and a final roster by the Passport Control meeting previous to the beginning of the tournament.

The roster was confirmed following the close of the NHL’s regular season and first-round playoff series and comprises of:

Total of seven players who have earlier represented Canada at the IIHF World Championship, comprising three gold medallists- Couturier: in the year 2015; Reinhart: in 2016; Stone: in 2016 and three returnees from the year 2018 and that are: Chabot, Nurse, and Turris.

Total of 16 players who represented Canada at the IIHF World Junior Championship, comprising seven gold medallists Fabbro: 2018; Hart: 2018; Nurse: 2015; Reinhart: 2015; Tavares: 2008, 2009; Theodore: 2015 and Turris: 2008.

Four other players who have never represented Canada in any IIHF competition and those are Bertuzzi, Marchessault, Montour, and Stecher.

The selections of the player were made by Canada’s management group which involved Jason Botterill (Winnipeg/Buffalo, NHL), Ron Francis (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) and Ron Hextall (Brandon, Man.).

Also, other selecting members are Tom Renney (Cranbrook, B.C.), chief executive officer with Hockey Canada, Scott Smith (Bathurst, N.B.), president and chief operating officer with Hockey Canada, in session with the coaching staff that comprises head coach Alain Vigneault (Quebec City, Philadelphia, NHL) as well as assistant coaches Dave Hakstol (Warburg, Alta.), Kirk Muller (Kingston, Ont./Montreal, NHL) and Lindy Ruff (Warburg, Alta./New York Rangers, NHL).

Botterill said, “It’s always a special opportunity when you get the call to represent your country on the international stage. This roster is a mix of youth and veterans who will help lead the way in this short-term competition. Our coaching staff is excited to work with these players as we get set for a competitive tournament in Slovakia starting May 10.”

Team Canada is going to stage in Vienna for the training camp, which comprises of a pre-tournament game that will be held on May 7 against Austria.

Since the year 2016, Canada is looking out for its first gold medal, when it opens the 2019 IIHF World Championship on May 10 against Finland. It is also going to face Denmark, Great Britain, France, Germany, and the United States as well as the host Slovakians in the preliminary round. The bronze and gold medal games are going to be played May 26.

Hockey Canada’s official broadcast partners such as TSN and RDS are going to carry 64 and 57 games, correspondingly; for more details check local listings.

Since the year 1931, Canada has also won the world championship for about 20 times (not including the years when the Olympic Winter Games gold medallist was also considered as world champion). The nation has also received 12 silver medals and seven bronze.
