2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup: Canada Advances To Quarter-Finals With Historic Win Against Cuba

In yesterday’s match of 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup, Canada made up their way to quarter-finals with a remarkable record-setting win against Cuba.

Coach John Herdman couldn’t be happier about yesterday’s win of the team. Herdman said, “Our Canadian football system is starting to produce players.” He further stated, “That’s exciting, seeing those youngsters coming through.”

The 15th edition 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup was started on June 15 with Canada vs Martinique match at Rose Bowl, Pasadena, where Canada marked their win with 4-0 scores. The United States is the defending champions of this year as they have won the last 2017 tournament.

Canada vs Cuba match was held at Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte where 19-year-old Jonathan David and Lucas Cavallini gave their remarkable performance and got three goals each. The remaining one goal was scored by Junior Hoilett which finished pool play with a 2-1 record in order to advance to the quarter-finals as a runner-up behind Mexico who outdid Group A.

Their amazing performance on Sunday leads Canada to 7-0 win over Cuba in the first game of a CONCACAF Gold Cup doubleheader. Cuba, on the other hand, the finished group plays with a disappointing performance.

The Sunday’s match also marked the first time in Concacaf history that two different players (Jonathan David and Lucas Cavallini) score a hat- trick in the same match.

Herdman also said that “I believe in the young guys,”. Herdman has also included an additional 19-year-old Alphonso Davies as well as others in talking about Canada’s soccer youth movement.

Cuba coach Idalberto Medero on their defeat said that Cavallini and David were way more difficult for his team to defend.

He said, “They are very fast and very quick with the ball and without it”.

He further stated, “They know how to move without the ball and play very well together. They play very well with modern day football, which is very fast.”

Even after the second half, Canada didn’t slow down as Hoillet made it 5-0 in the 50th minute as well as David had his hat trick by the 77th minute, also netting in the 71st.

“If we never brought that energy Cuba could have gotten that little injection and made it tough for us,” Herdman said. He added, “But there was clarity from all of the players. [Cavallini] and Johnny were given some great opportunities.”

Against Cuba, Canada made some history by scoring the most goals they have ever scored in a Gold Cup match.
