The movie was able to earn $5 million in the previews from Thursday. It is obviously not any terrible result but the history of X- Men includes many midnight screenings. The movie has seen the halfway between the decent chunks of the collection at the box office grosses.

The movie was behind Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Mission Impossible 2, Toy Story 2, The Phantom menace and the Lost World. It is the biggest non-sequel opening weekend ever. X Men have been like the Star Trek series who began its running to the top in the opening weekend charts in order to become more and more success. The Star Trek: The motion pictures made a record of $11 million in its opening weekend in 1979 while the Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan did 1982 earning about $14.5 million. Star Trek and X-Men have great similarities in terms of hardcore fans and also in their use of sci-fi fantasy
X-Men previous movies and Dark Phoenix Review
But soon they both lost themselves when Star Wars returned into theatres and the MCU films surpassed what the X Men series was to offer. X Men Origins: Wolverine which opened with $5 million in Thursday at previews in 2009 which eventually earned $85 million. X-Men: First class made a gross of about $54 million. X-Men: Days of Future Past earned around $90 million. X Men: Apocalypse earned about $65 million in the year 2016.
The fact cannot be denied that the Dark Phoenix reviews are not that good. People are not appreciating the movie very much. The general audience has already seen the Dark Phoenix Saga play out in X-Men: The Last Stand. People also know about the movie that this is the last X Men movie released before MCU reboot and still there is not much reason to be optimistic. There is an opening weekend closer to $40 million instead of those $50 million. This type of gross will not shock the audience anymore.
