               World Senior Citizens Day History, Celebration, Theme, Activities: World Senior Citizens Day is observed on the 21st of August. The day was first proclaimed on 14th of December,1990 by the United Nations General Assembly. The holiday of this day was celebrated for the first time on 1st October 1991. The day is acknowledged to raise awareness among the people to know and understand the factors and issues affecting the old people such as deterioration with age and to examine the issues that affect the liver such as the abuse of all elderly people. It is also a day to help and recognize the contributions that older people make to society.

The day is observed officially from the year 1988. this day was officially established by the former president of the United States of America. Ronald Regan was the first person to promulgate the Senior citizens day. The promulgation text is quoted below:

For all, they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older – places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance, and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity”.

Celebration of the World Senior Citizens Day

The day is to raise awareness of the conditions of the elder people and so that they could get support from us in senescence. The day is also to celebrate and acknowledge the contribution that senior citizens have made for society. The day is to reward their involvement in the activities which are done for the welfare of the other senior citizens. On this day we acknowledge and elders for all those things that they have done for their children. They have sacrificed their lives in nurturing and protecting their relationships. They always rendered their selfless service and this deserves some appreciation and respect from our side. The World Senior Citizens Day is an important time so as to make the government realize about its pledges to work towards developing goals and towards helping the elder people. The aim was also to end hunger and poverty for older persons and people of all ages.

World Senior Citizens Day Themes

The theme of the celebration is decided every year so as to connect all senior citizens across the world into a single platform. In the year 2017 the theme was ” Stepping into the Future: Tapping the Talents, Contributions, and Participation of Older Persons in Society.” This year the theme is also about expanding and enabling the contributions that older generation has made for the society.
