2019 Winter Universiade: Events, Venues, Host City And Sports

          The 2019 Winter Universiade is a global student and youth tournament, which is started from today onwards that is on Saturday, 2nd March 2019. The tournament is scheduled to conclude on 12 March 2019 and the event will be held in the Russian city of Krasnoyarsk.

Students who are aged between 17 to 25 years old and are graduates who have received an academic degree or diploma in the year earlier to the tournament are acceptable to take part in the competition.

About the Event

Krasnoyarsk is the host city for the 2019 Winter Universiade tournament which is located in Russia. There are total numbers of 50 nations participating who are participating in the competition. A total number of athletes participating in the tournament is 3000.

There is going to be a total of 76 events in 11 sports. The opening ceremony of the tournament is on 2 March 2019 whereas the closing ceremony will be on 12 March 2019.

At the meeting of the Executive Committee of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) which was held in Brussels on 9 November 2013, all the way Krasnoyarsk was selected as the host city of the 29th Winter Universiade 2019.

This is the second time of the 2019 Winter Universiade and that Russia is hosting. Kazan city was the first one to host the first Universiade in 2013, while Moscow hosted the 1973 Summer Universiade.

Selection Of Host City

On 3rd April 2013, International University Sports Federation (FISU) officially confirmed two candidate cities for hosting the 2019 Winter Universiade and those two candidate cities were:

·         Valais, Switzerland

The bidding campaign for the right to host the 2019 Winter and Summer Universiades was launched on 1 September 2012. The Russian Students Sports Union (RSSU), on the same day, sent a letter to Mr. Claude-Louis Galen who is the President of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), about Krasnoyarsk’s intent to apply for the right to host the Winter Universiade 2019. From then only, Krasnoyarsk has officially been an applicant city.

Krasnoyarsk’s contender of the tournament for the right to host the Winter Universiade 2019 was the Swiss Canton of Valais.

Both candidates worked on the preparation of application outline throughout the whole year. On 14 September 2013, Krasnoyarsk offered its Bidding Book at the FISU headquarters and established the position of a candidate city. The only participant at this phase extracted from the application.
