You might have come across the words LED and OLED while browsing the specifications of TVs. But ever thought what is the difference between OLED vs LED Display? How does just an “O” make a difference? Well, that “O” has a significant difference between both in the television industry. So which one is actually better when it comes to displaying in the day to day life. OLED TVs had a huge price gap from LED TV’s, back when it was launched. However, the rates have come down considerably now.
What are OLEDs and LEDs?
You might be shocked to know that your TV companies have been fooling you around with the name of LED TV. They actually sell you the normal LCD TV suggest has an LED back panel. Led stands for the light emitting diode. These are very small diodes used to emit light. However, the LED TVs use them to just generate light. These lights are reflected by LCD to generate colors. This is where both LED and OLED is differentiated.
OLEDs on the other hand, use the LED panels to generate both light and color. Hence, there is a significant difference between the working of both. OLEDs, therefore, produce more vibrant colors. The OLEDs can produce colors in every single pixel. There are millions of pixels on a single TV screen. Whereas LEDs, a large enough to not get into every single pixel of the screen.
OLED vs LED: Which is better?
Blacklight
One of the major factors that determines a better screen is that which can produce a better black light. OLEDs are the undisputed champion in this segment. This is because the diodes are capable of producing black colors itself. Whereas, LED cannot produce black color on its own as it reflects the color through the LCD screen. Hence, OLEDs can give you a perfect backlight black color which helps in better contrast and picture quality.
Brightness
When it comes to brightness, LEDs can get brighter because of the quantum dots. This helps them to get extremely bright without any exaggeration of colors. On the other hand, OLEDs can get bright, too, but not as much as a LEDs. This is because the intense black light in the background becomes over exaggerated if brightness is too high. Hence, the LCD/LED display has an upper edge when it comes to brightness.
Response Time
This refers to the time taken by the screen to turn on or off. LEDs take a significant time to illuminate the screen after being turned on. This is because the diodes first get started themselves and then it depends upon the elimination of the LCD screen. Also, they light up a number of pixels together. On the other hand, OLEDs lights up instantly HD Power is turned on. This is because of the extremely small size of the diodes. They instantly light up every pixel by producing colors itself. This makes them significantly faster. OLEDs when this segment also.
Viewing Angles
There is no match to the OLED screens when it comes to viewing angles. The sharpest viewing angle for the LED TV’s is its dead center. As you move towards the off-side, the viewing quality decreases considerably. OLEDs have a great viewing angle because of illuminating every single pixel on a screen. There is no difference in the quality if you see it from the center or from 80 degrees. The color and contrast are pretty much same, viewed from anywhere.
Hence, OLEDs are better as a screen. However, they are used only by Sony and LG in TVs. You will not find any other manufacturer in the US, using the OLED screen in televisions.
