It is a symbol of victory of good over evil and marks the arrival of spring and to show gratitude for a good harvest. In Holi festival, people play with colors known as” Gulal” and colored waters and balloons.
When is Holi this year?
It is celebrated on Purnima 9 the full moon, in the month of Falgun over the two consecutive days- the first day of Holi known as Choti Holi or Holika Dahan and the second as Rangwali Holi, Dhuleti, or Dhulivandan. This year Holi is celebrated on March 20 and 21. People make a large bonfire termed as Holika Dahan and on the evening of Choti Holi they fire it and perform Pingpuja while praying for the longevity and prosperity of their loved ones.
The Story Behind The Holi
There is a legend from Hindu mythology. The story is that there was once a king named Hiranyakashipu who resented his son, Prince Prahlada for worshipping Lord Vishnu. He subjected Prahlada to cruel punishment none of which affected the boy. He also tried to kill Prahalada but foiled.
Finally, the king’s sister Holika who is said to be immune to burning sits with the boy inside a fire while boys remained unhurt and Holika burns in the fire and dies. That’s why huge bonfire is burnt on the eve of the Choti Holi.
