The day focuses on a particular theme that changes every year and that is at the heart of the international museum community’s preoccupations.

International Museum Day is celebrated annually in order to raise the awareness among the public that museums are a significant and vital means of cultural exchange, enhancement of cultures and expansion of mutual understanding, cooperation and harmony among people. Its day is organized by the International Council of Museums (ICOM).

In the year 1977, the International Museum Day was formed by the International Council of Museums. Each year this organization picks a distinct special theme and synchronized every single year.
